Istanbul - Troy
Troy's ragged appearance belies its incredible past. The past 3200 years have not been kind to Illium, lasting evidence of the Greek's great success. Trade routes probably began shifting at the time of the Trojan War, and Troy remained a small town until 400 A.D., after which it slipped out of the sight. People continued to inhabit the site, but the town was eventually abandoned in the 1300s as the Ottoman Empire began consolidating power in the region. What distinguishes Troy is its marvelous history.
Heroes walked the earth here, Hector and Archilles, Paris and Ajax. There is something defiantly magical about this place of myth and childhood fairy tales. Schliemann had used The Iliadasas his guide, and the story was very clear in some of its particulars: Troy was a close march from the sea; Troy was near two springs; the city was small enough, and the terrain smooth enough, that Hector could race around it, and later be dragged around it by Archille's horse. Using these clues, Schliemann hunted through the region.
Years of sifting through the ancient layers proved Schliemann correct.
